Reddit Bans 'The_Donald' Sub Forum & Twitch suspends Trump's channel

Reddit Ban-hammer

This was not a great week for online Trump communities. Reddit is taking a hardened stance against hate speech. This resulted in the removal of 2,000 racist and violent subreddit (forums). Reddit was first launched in June 2005, as a site to promote online discussion. Now, Reddit is one of the largest and most diverse forums on the web today. Some will think that the move against hate has taken to long, where as others will view this as an attack on free speech.

Either way, Reddit announced on Monday that users and groups who “incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability” are prohibited. “Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying and threats of violence.”  One of the largest subreddits called The_Donald, which was obviously a pro-Trump forum, was banned. The_Donald had close to 800,000 members. Reddit Chief Executive Officer/co-founder Steve Huffman wrote “All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith. We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity.”

The_Donald was notorious for anti-Islam/Semitic/Black/misogyny content, which is of course gross. It will be interesting to see how the holistic approach to moderation evolves over time for the rest of Reddit.

“We are committed to working with you to combat the bad actors, abusive behaviors, and toxic communities that undermine our mission and exist solely to get in the way of the creativity, discussions, and communities that bring us all to Reddit in the first place,”

Twitch Poggers

The streaming giant Twitch temporarily banned Trump’s channel on Monday. Trump’s campaign launched the page in October with the intent of streaming his rallies and other events.

A twitch spokesperson said, “Hateful conduct is not allowed on Twitch. In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream, and the offending content has been removed.” The spokesperson also stated that “Like anyone else, politicians on Twitch must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We do not make exceptions for political or newsworthy content, and will take action on content reported to us that violates our rules.”

Twitch also recently banned popular streamer Dr. Disrespect. This reasons for his ban are still unknown to the general public.
