Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly trivialized and minimized the coronavirus. He pushed for Brazil to return to normalcy despite insurmountable evidence to the contrary. Few world leaders have taken his stance on the issue. President Bolsonaro, 65, has been against most social distancing measures, and has devalued the severity of the disease since Brazil’s first confirmed case on February 26th. Weeks ago, Brazil crossed 1 million COVID-19 cases. Now the number has sky-rocked past the 1.6 million mark with 65,000 deaths according to Worldometers.info. Brazil has the second most recorded coronavirus cases in the world.
After the news broke, Bolonaro removed his mask and stated “Just look at my face. I’m well, fine, thank God … Thanks to all those who have been praying for me … and to those who criticize me, no problem, carry on criticizing as much as you like.”
No problem, as there is no shortage of criticism here. It is preposterous that he has not deviated his stance after contracting the disease. Even his wife’s 80-year-old grand mother was hospitalized after contracting coronavirus on Sunday. The mayor of São Paulo also is ill after contracting the coronavirus last week. So, of course, listen to President Bolonaro, everything is fine in Brazil.
