Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov father to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion died today due to “COVID-19 related complications.” Abdulmanap was 57 years old, and passed away in a hospital in Moscow confirmed by manager Ali abdelaziz. RT.com reported that Abdulmanap had suffered a heart attack after being diagnosed with coronavirus. After emergency bypass surgery he was placed into a medically-induced coma.
Khabib had indicated that his father was in serious condition back in May of this year. Abdulmanap is not only a father to Khabib but also a longtime coach, mentor and friend. Abdelaziz spoke to ESPN on Friday and stated that, “He was a father, coach, brother, an icon. Things will never be the same without him.”
A flood of social media posts have come from MMA fighters, the UFC, and others. The whole community has showed support and condolences to the Nurmagomedov family. One tweet was from long time rival Conor McGregor who wrote, “The loss of a father, a coach, and a dedicated supporter of the sport. Condolences and rest in peace Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.”
Khabib was almost always seen with his father during fight weeks, and often spoke publicly about the importance of family in his life. It is heart breaking to see any person lose so much in one day. Condolences and Love. RIP.
