Jon Jones Vacates UFC Light Heavyweight Title

An end of an era.

The Jon Jones reign over the UFC light heavyweight division is over. Honestly, the news is bittersweet. He has been the face of the division for years, however now this perhaps clears the road for a run at the heavyweight title.

Bones Tweeted that he,

“Just got off the phone with [the UFC], today I confirm that I’m vacating the light heavyweight championship. It’s officially up for grabs. It’s been an amazing journey, sincere thank you to all my competition, Ufc and most importantly you fans.”

Jones has made it a habit of releasing tweets after several heavyweight fights that featured former light heavyweights. The most recent heavyweight title fight between Champion Stipe Miocic and former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

After the title fight featuring his former rival, Jones tweeted “For some reason these heavyweights don’t seem so big to me tonight”.

Bones is taking the move up to heavyweight seriously. Jon continued to explain, “In good faith I will be staying in the testing pool for probably the next half year or so. I’ll continue to lift weights and train all the different martial arts”.
