DAAAAAAAMN! What an incredible fight, and in a perfect world, this fight would happen regardless. Former welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St. Pierre and current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov have both repeatedly voiced interest in competing against one another inside the octagon. Despite the UFC’s reluctance to deal with Georges St. Pierre, Khabib Nurmagomedov has stated that if he defends his title versus Justin Gaethje the UFC “Will negotiate with St-Pierre”
Though Georges St Pierre is one of the greatest fighters of all time, he has not fought since 2017. Now 39, St Pierre would be up against his most difficult challenge in Khabib Nurmagomedov. The temptation however, to become the first fighter to win a belt in three weight classes would be to great an opportunity for St Pierre to ignore.
“This is a fight between my dreams and my father,” The undefeated lightweight champion explained. “Time is ticking, St-Pierre is 40 years old next year, he has to decide whether we will fight or not.”
Khabib continued to explain his motivation to face one of the sports all time greats.
“Why? Because the last time he lost was 2007. My career started in 2008. Together we’ve been undefeated for 25 years. I’m talking in terms of time, not fights. I don’t think the UFC will get another chance to make a fight like that, definitely not in the next 10 years. So, Georges St-Pierre is next. If not, then let Conor beat (Dustin) Poirier or have Tony Ferguson beat him, then I’ll fight them.”
There was not solely St Pierre talk form Nurmagomedov. He also stated that Conor McGregor or Tony Ferguson must beat Dustin Poirier in order to challenge his title. This is certainly a fair proposition. Plus, what fan would not like to see either of those fights. Honestly, a fight between McGregor and Tony Ferguson would also be amazing.
