  • 5 Fights That We Never Got To See In MMA
With the dust settling after UFC 254 and the retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov, one can not help but think about all the great Khabib matchups that we will likely never see. Unlike in the sport of boxing, MMA has fortunately managed to make many of the dream fights happen when they are contextually the most relevant. However, there have been a few great matchups that have slipped through the octagon cracks and into the speculatory abyss. So here are 5 MMA fights that we unfortunately never came to fruition.
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov Retires From MMA After Defeating Justin Gaethje
The Undefeated, undisputed lightweight champion of the world retired after Defeating Justin Gaethje on Fight Island. He is the most dominant fighter in UFC history. Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his lightweight belt after submitting interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje by triangle submission in the second round at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi. Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, had lost his life due to Covid-19 related complications in July of this year. In his post-fight interview, Khabib removed his gloves and stated that “This is my last fight. There’s no way I’m going to be back without my father.” Khabib decided to not do any interviews immediately after his post-fight victory interview. Dana White indicated that he found out after the fight that Khabib had broken two bones in his toes and one bone in his foot a few weeks before the fight. Which certainly makes the victory even more incredible. It would also explain why he seemed to have trouble on the scales.
  • Bjergsen Retires And Becomes The New TSM Head Coach
An end of an Era for the LCS. Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg has retired after competing as the star midlaner for TSM’s League of Legends team for 8 seasons. Bjergsen changed the LCS landscape when he arrived in North America. The beginnings of his professional career were humble. In 2013, he led a struggling European team in the Copenhagen Wolves. Though they were in last place, Bjergsen’s talent for the game was undeniable. He was the second European player to be imported to an LCS team. After smashing the homegrown crop of LCS midlaners, he preceded to become a 4 times season MVP, as well as lead TSM to 6 times LCS championships.
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) Streams On Twitch To Over 430,000 Viewers
Gaming has been penetrating mainstream culture for decades, and it has even found its way into American politics. Popular U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has been openly discussed her love of gaming before. She used her time on the platform not only to relate to her passionate fanbase but to encourage her viewers to vote in the upcoming American election. Earlier this year, AOC tweeted when she ascended to Silver 3 in League of Legends. This was another great example of a politician using a popular medium to just be “normal”, (or as normal as a celebrity/politician playing video games alongside other celebrities in front of thousands of fans) can be considered normal.
  • Nigeria’s Police Brutality Problem is Larger than SARS
Nigerian protesters refuse to disband their protests against police brutality. The activists and campaigners have marched daily for a week demanding true action against a system that produces corrupt and violent officers. Anit-police brutality protests have continued to persist despite authorities agreeing to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The specialized police unit has a history of perpetrating violence against the very people it was created to protect. SARS has been accused of torture, robbery, kidnapping, extrajudicial murder, extortion, and other crimes.
